Two Foods NOT to Eat and Five Foods That Kill Belly Fat
“Some of these foods are marketed to you as “health foods” but are actually silently making you gain extra stomach fat!” Mike Geary
He will give you lush pastureland for your cattle to graze in, and you yourselves will have plenty to eat. (Deut. 11:15; NLT)
The gist of this week’s posts comes from the now famous Mike Geary. I recently read his article, “5 Foods that Kill Fat (and 2 to STOP eating).” I’ll begin today’s post with the 2 to STOP eating.
The first food he warns about is “whole grains.” These include whole grain breads, pasta, muffins, and more. Most people know that refined grains such as white flour products are bad, however many people also believe that whole grain foods are good for us and can help to lose fat. He says this could be a big mistake holding you back from a lean body and flat stomach.
On a personal note, Jerry and I spent MANY years eating whole grains. As vegetarians for a number of years, whole grains were a mainstay in our diet. At various times throughout the years we would avoid grains all together for short periods of time but would eventually always add them back into our diet. Since doing our AIEP plan this past summer, we’ve avoided eating grains consistently with a rare to occasional exception.
One thing (among many) that we’ve noticed is that we both have a flatter stomach than we can remember having in a long time. It’s nice to know that my clothes are going to fit when I put them on and not have to wonder if they’ll be too tight around the waist or middle.
Mike’s second “STOP eating” food is SOY. Quoting Mike, “Another so-called “health food” that you have been deceived about is soy…. Some of the biggest offenders in the soy industry are soymilk, tofu, and soy protein products. Remember that soy is a BIG multi-billion dollar industry and their goal is to use clever marketing to fool you into thinking that these highly processed soy products are actually healthy for you, so you buy more of them thinking you’re doing the body good.”
Ouch…he hits it hard! He goes on at great length detailing the dangers of eating processed soy products. I’ve written several posts myself on why not to eat soy products. However, just like the whole grains, we were also “heavy users.” I was known as the “Tofu Queen.” I could use tofu in salads, lasagna, and cheesecake and make it taste good! Mike says, “Want more belly fat….just go ahead and drink more soymilk and eat more tofu!”
We’ll look at the 5 Foods that Kill Fat in the next post.

Comments on Two Foods NOT to Eat and Five Foods That Kill Belly Fat
Sharon, how in the world have you learned to do without bread????? I must admit that I am so much better than I once was about eating it… gave up the white stuff a while ago… then with allergies… gave up the whole wheat… went to whole grain… it does pretty good but I have the ’round middle’… I have used the Ezkeiel breads but they are harder to get in my area so I end up using what I can lay my hands on…. however, with all of this talk… I sincerely would like to find something that I can still have a sandwich etc. with… what would you suggest????
I have recently started using organic quinoa – are you saying that has to go as well ?
oh – and no oatmeal as well ?
Sharon, Interesting piece…..any chance that we possibly overdo the grains and soy? I have definitely noticed that soy, in moderation, has benefits not found naturally in other foods. Looking at how other cultures incorporate the grains and soy into their diets, without the negative consequences we see here in the U.S., has convinced me that most “healthy” foods are okay in moderation. Thoughts?
Dear Pam, I’m not about to say that it was easy. I made our own bread and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I’ve read so much substantial research from respected authorities saying how gluten and grains cause inflammation in the body and I’ve noticed improvements in my own health by not eating gluten or other grains. There is bread made from brown rice flour so it doesn’t contain gluten but it is from a grain.
Kathy, quinoa doesn’t contain gluten so many people don’t have an issue with it. Mike Geary is reporting what he has researched and noticed. And I’m reporting what I’ve personally experienced. The gluten in grains gives many people health issues, so eliminating the gluten-containing grains might be the first step for folks.
And, sorry to say, oats does contain gluten although some gluten-sensitive folks do tolerate it–others do not.
Julie, that is certainly true that we have overdone both grains and soy products. And the fermented soy products such as miso, tempeh and tamari don’t cause the issues that the highly processed soy products cause. The countries that use soy in their diet successfully eat the fermented forms of soy and not the highly processed forms that Mike Geary is referring to.
Hi Sharon
Great article, very helpful, keep up the good work. Can’t wait for your cookbook! Mare
I have gluten allergies. Is there a helpful cookbook available to purchase that would give me ideas on what to eat when replacing gluten?
Hi Anne,
Sharon here. Since more and more people are having challenges with gluten, there are any number of books available. If you’re not familiar with the Paleo concept, let me briefly explain. This concept not only eliminates gluten from the diet but other grains as well, which is extremely helpful for the body. There are several cookbooks that I can recommend that will not only eliminate gluten for you but other grains too.
The Paleo Diet Cookbook by Loren Cordain is one. The Food Lovers Make it Paleo by Bill Staley and Hayley Mason and Paleo Comfort Foods by Julie and Charles Mayfield. I have all three of these and they are good books. When someone is sensitive to gluten, one thing I don’t recommend is going out and buying all kinds of gluten free foods that are processed and packaged. Eat real foods. Your body will thank you. Let me know if I can offer further assistance Anne.
