Life Really Can Be Fun

“Each time we do our best to thank God for giving his, we worship.” Max Lucado
How do you handle the ups and downs of life?
Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you have already given us! (1 Chron. 29:14b; NLT)
I’ve got some good news and some bad news. First the good news — life can be a roller coaster at times, and the view from the mountain top is unbeatable. Now the bad news — life can be a roller coaster at times, and the view from the valley floor can be totally devastating.
Now, here’s the interesting news — and really the good news. Life doesn’t have to be a roller coaster. Yes, there will be times when everything seems to be going your way and it just couldn’t be better, and yes, there will be times when it seems that nothing, absolutely nothing is going your way and it just couldn’t get any worse. But the way off that roller coaster is to get your mind off of your self and the events of the moment, and focus on developing an attitude of gratitude.
No matter what is going on, there is always reason to be grateful. Grateful for the incredibly wonderful things that are happening, or grateful that it isn’t as bad as it could be (look around and you’ll always be able to find someone who has it worse). That act of being grateful acknowledges that there is a higher power, a source, a giver of gifts. Maybe the gift is the talents and skills you have been given that is the fuel for things going well; or on the other hand, maybe the gift is the protection that put a limit on the ramifications from things not going so well.
I’ve found that being grateful in all things takes my eyes off of my situation and places them on the giver of gifts. That in turn always seems to supernaturally level out the roller coaster and even out the bumps. I’ve also noticed that the result is not just a ride of mediocrity, but a ride of peace and joy. And when you have that peace and joy about life, you also begin to see more and more that life really can be fun. And I believe that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Don’t you?
Prayer Power
Father, we thank You that You have provided a way for us to rise above our circumstances and not be victims tossed to and fro without choice. Help us learn the discipline of gratitude.
