Law of Reciprocity

“If you do good to others, you will receive the good that you send into the world back. It may not be from the same source, and it may not be immediate, but without a doubt, you will receive it back. Conversely, if you put evil out into the world, it will just as surely come back to you.” Seni Hazzan
Describe the last time someone when out of their way to do you a favor? How did that make you feel?
Do for others what you would like them to do for you. This is a summary of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. (Matt. 7:12; NLT)
As I said when I started this series (8/6), in my reading over the past several years, I’ve been exposed to many lists of so-called irrefutable laws. Of all those lists, I have found the list of nine by Hazzan (from his book, Rebuilding from Ground Zero) to be the most useful and consistent with my Christian world view. I thought I would share one or two of those fundamental laws through the next several DGs. Don’t forget to leave comments as you feel led.
The Law of Reciprocity aka The Golden Rule states, “Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.” The Golden Rule! This is one of the laws that virtually everybody has been taught at one time in their life or certainly heard about. Virtually all the world’s major religions have a similar tenet. Yet, how many of us make a concerted effort to live according to this law?
Look at the second part of Hazzan’s quote above…”Conversely, if you put evil out into the world, it will just as surely come back to you.” What does this understanding do to the concept and need that many seem to have for revenge? This, like all the other laws, have got to become more than just concepts that find agreement in our heads. We must have them settle into our heart and become values that we live by unconsciously. In other words, they must virtually become habits in our day-to-day dealings with other people.
Easier said than done. Move the Golden Rule from Sunday School out into our daily lives. Lord, help me!
Prayer Power
Lord, too often we give mental assent to your truths but fail to consistently live them out, especially when emotions are running high. Usually, we are not even aware of the conflict. We ask you to increase our awareness when we’re stepping over the line so that we can consciously choose to do the right thing.
