If These Walls Could Talk

“Today’s child is bewildered when he enters the 19th century environment that still characterizes the educational establishment where information is scarce but ordered and structured by fragmented, classified patterns, subjects, and schedules.” Marshall McLuhan (40+ years ago)
How well did your education prepare you for the life you are living today?
This is but one of many traditions they have clung to… (Mark 7:4b; NLT)
Today, I’ve just got a very short note to introduce you to another YouTube video of the same genre as last Wednesday’s DG entitled “Did You Know.” This one actually came to me from Regent University, where I have the awesome privilege and responsibility of serving as an Adjunct Professor.
Obviously, the powers that be at Regent sent this out to encourage their professors to consider the relevance of what they teach and how they teach it. However, I believe, just like “Did You Know,” that this video needs to be seen by more than just university profs. Here again, there are some sobering statistics, and some startling revelations. If you’re a parent or grandparent with young adults in college, you need to watch this. This is what you’re paying for. If you’re an employer, you need to watch this…this is what you’ll soon be hiring. If you’re children are younger, this is the system they are destined to enter unless something drastically changes in the next few years.
Again, I believe these two videos are demonstrating that we’re really missing the mark when it comes to so-called “higher” education. But, then again, how can you put together any system that is equipped to respond to change that is happening as rapidly as we are seeing it occur today. And one thing we know for sure…the rate of change will only get faster and faster as time goes on. What’s the answer???
We pray that you have a better than fantastic weekend!
Prayer Power
Lord, we thank You for the dedicated men and women who have given their lives serving others as educators. Unfortunately, it seems that educating our future leaders is not as simple as it once was. We sincerely ask that You would begin to provide answers to those who are in positions of authority that can implement the necessary changes. Grant them the wisdom and ability to make the necessary adjustments.
