How Long is Too Long?

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Albert Einstein
How long should someone try to do the same thing before deciding to take a different approach?
In 1971 President Richard Nixon declared war on cancer. Almost 40 years later, cancer is poised to surpass cardiovascular disease and become America’s leading killer. Approximately 70% more Americans will die from cancer this year than did in 1971. Maybe it’s time to try something new?
In 1977 a Senate subcommittee released the report, “Dietary Goals for the United States.” That report declared fat as the primary enemy of good health. As a result, the National Institutes of Health declared a war on fat some seven years later and garnered the willing and gleeful support of the food industry. Now, after 25 years of no fat and low fat, the rate of obesity has gone from a steady 13% through the 60’s and 70’s to an alarming and growing 25% while 70% of Americans are now classified as overweight. Maybe it’s time to try something new?
This DG is not going there, but while those two incredible war stories are on the table, let me ask one more question — Do you suppose there might be a connection between the two? In other words, is it possible that one might one be exacerbating the other?
Let’s go back to the war on fat. It should be abundantly clear by now that taking the fat out of foods does not, in and of itself, make them non-fattening. You see, when you take the fat out of food, you also remove a significant portion of the taste. So, in order to make the fat-deprived food that now tastes like medicine more palatable, the food processor must put something back in or people won’t buy into the plan.
So, the food industry looked to Mary Poppins for the answer. Remember, she’s the sage who told us all that a spoonful of sugar would make the medicine go down. So since the low fat campaign began, Americans are now eating more than 500 additional calories a day, mostly from sugar in one of its many disguises.
Kinda makes you wonder if we wouldn’t be better off to return to the fat-laden foods that God made. It looks like He was right after all. All that fat He put into food wasn’t a mistake. Amazing, isn’t it?
