How many people do you know who don’t like to read?

A couple of days ago, I wrote about City Reachers, one of the ministries of the International Bible Society that is printing and distributing New Testaments in entire metropolitan areas.  Today, I’d like to tell you a little about an organization known as Faith Comes By Hearing.  We learned about this group through a CD that was pasted in the latest copy of Ministry Today magazine.  That CD had the entire dramatized NIV New Testament on it in MP3 format.  

The ad copy pointed out that 65% of Bible-believing Christians have never read the entire New Testament, and that 50% of teens believe that Jesus may have committed sins, and that 43% of Americans function at or below basic literacy levels.  Faith Comes By Hearing is sponsored by Christian business people who are alarmed by the startling, current trends of biblical illiteracy in America.  

When I went to their web site (link below) I discovered that Faith Comes By Hearing offers the largest catalog of audio Bibles in the world, currently recorded in 262 languages spoken by people living in 92 countries on every continent.  When you realize that over half of the world’s population cannot read, you begin to realize the significance of this ministry in spreading God’s Word worldwide.  

The City Reachers project of the International Bible Society and Faith Comes By Hearing are just two ministries that we’ve heard about within days of each other.  I’m sure there are several more doing equally incredible and amazing things to spread God’s Word.  Do you suppose that this is part of what Jesus had in mind when He said that believers “will do the same works I have done, and even greater works….” (John 14:12)?

Father, we thank you for the technology that makes Faith Comes By Hearing possible.  It is hard to imagine the impact of so many people having access, many for the first time, to hearing Your Word in their native languages.  We pray that You would meet all the needs to this organization as they continue to so effectively spread the Gospel throughout the world.
