How are you doing with your health and wellness goals for 2010?

So they ate until they were full and grew fat and enjoyed themselves in all your blessings.  (Neh. 9:25b; NLT)

When I was working out at the gym yesterday, I glanced up at the TV screen as I sometimes do.  There was no sound coming from the TV, but I did a double-take as I watched a young man drink something from a can that looked like soda.  The soda quickly changed from a liquid to a white, fatty-looking substance.  I saw headlines about New York City’s health department wanting to do something about the city’s obesity epidemic.  That was the extent of what I saw on TV.  However, as soon as I got home (and washed my hands), I did an Internet search to see what I could find.

Apparently, the New York City’s health department has released a controversial YouTube video in a fight against obesity.  The 30-second video shows globs of fat being gulped from a soft drink can. “It’s a graphic depiction from the New York City Department of Health of the potential effects of over consuming sugary beverages.”  According to several news reports, the Health Department says over the course of a year drinking one non-diet soda a day can make you 10 pounds heavier. Its anti-obesity campaign targets soda, sports drinks, and energy drinks, among others.

“We wanted to call attention to this problem of people drinking too many sugar sweetened beverages and the risk of obesity that’s associated with that,” said the Health Department’s Cathy Nonas.

You’ve heard me say many times that it’s not fat that makes one fat….it’s sugar that turns to fat that makes us fat.  This video is a graphic depiction of this.  The video does encourage people to drink more water.  And even though the Press Release mentions non-diet soda, know that diet sodas are NO better for anyone.  The Press Release didn’t mention this little fact, but research has proven that many, many obese people drink diet sodas. Artificial sweeteners cause no less obesity.

Be ready for a jaw opener as you watch the video.  Hopefully, you’ll never put another can of soda to your lips again.
