“If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.” Frank A. Clark
What is the major obstacle you are facing right now?
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Rom. 12:21; NKJ)
Two of the five definitions for the word “overcomer” offered by Dictionary.com are:
1.to get the better of in a struggle or conflict; conquer; defeat: to overcome the enemy.
2.to prevail over (opposition, a debility, temptations, etc.); surmount: to overcome one’s weaknesses.
Both are adequate to get at what I want to offer to you today. Life can sometimes be hard. In fact, that was the title of a Daily Gram back on 10/10. The question is always–will we rise to the occasion and overcome the difficulty or the obstacle–or will we let it “take us out?” No matter how big the obstacle seems to us, I believe with all my heart that God is faithful to give us the grace to overcome it…if we are willing to push through and fight back.
In fact, just this past Sunday, our pastor, Tom Conant, preached a dynamite sermon in which he gave us three strategies “To Kill A Giant.” The first strategy was to recognize that in God’s eyes, giants, no matter how big they are to us are simply “gi-ANTs.” It’s all a matter of perspective. (And it’s always God’s perspective that counts.) Secondly, remembering past victories (whether they are our victories or the victories of others) helps take the focus off of ourself and strengthens our faith. Then finally, he pointed out that we should use our WMD’s (Weapons of Mighty Deliverance, i.e., God’s Word, a faith-filled attitude, and praise) to confront the giant head on.
You may remember Sharon’s Daily Gram back on 10/18 when she wrote about our good friend Karen, who in her own words wrote, “At age 63, I am enjoying physical and spiritual health…. Though congenitally and totally blind, I have been blessed with a doctorate in English as well as a law degree. Better still, I have known the Lord for many years. He has granted me a wonderful triple career in education, law, and music. I now work part-time under contract as Braille music advisor for the Library of Congress and am also enjoying many other pursuits.” Talk about an overcomer–and a giant killer!
All that was to say I just received another incredible example of what a human can do to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Check out the link below. It’s only about three and a half minutes long and it will make your day. Have a great overcoming weekend!
Prayer Power
Lord, to see and hear of such incredible feats of overcoming obstacles is both humbling and faith-building. We thank You for the inspiration they provide us, and for the infusion of courage that comes as a result of that inspiration. Thank You for the Karens and the Bens of the world. Bless them as much as they bless us.
