“Do what’s good for our animals, good for our planet and good for you.” Grasslandbeef.com
You will live in the fields with the wild animals, and you will eat grass like a cow. (Daniel 4:32a; NLT)
While growing up on a dairy farm in the 50’s and 60’s, our cows grazed on pasture for most of three seasons of the year. Granted, the winters in Pennsylvania were oftentimes brutal, so the cows stayed in the barn the majority of the time and were fed hay and grain that we grew. Even though they weren’t totally grass-fed, their food was a far cry from what most cows eat today.
As I’ve mentioned before, Jerry and I ate a vegetarian diet for many years. After seeing the light several years ago, we began adding poultry and beef back into our diets. When I made the first Sloppy Joes in more than two decades, the smell of the beef cooking immediately took me back to the memories on the farm.
At first I was perplexed by this. Why was this smell taking me back to our farm kitchen? That’s when I first began to realize the difference in ground beef. I was using grass-fed beef (from Pennsylvania, by the way) to make the Sloppy Joes. It smelled like the meat we had on the farm when I was growing up.
I continue to eat grass fed beef and the smell of it cooking always takes me back to the years on the farm. I’m not exactly sure why but on the occasion when I’ve smelled non grass fed beef, the smell is very different! No comparison.
Grass fed beef is becoming more and more popular as educated consumers seek it out and even demand it, if you will. I’d heard of Grassland Beef before but was reminded about it again last week by our colleague, Isabel De Los Rios.
Founded by fifth-generation farmer John Wood, “U.S. Wellness Meats grew out of John’s realization that there was a unique way of raising cattle for a growing niche of U.S. consumers who were beginning to understand the health benefits of CLA and omega-3s from free-range meat.”
You’ll enjoy the short video clip of John and his partner as they share about the wonderful benefits of eating grass-fed beef. Don’t miss it! I’ve not bought any of their beef yet, but when my current supply runs out, you can be sure that I’ll be placing an order with this grass-roots farm.
Father, we are so grateful for farmers who are willing to go against the grain and do what it takes to raise happy, healthy cows.

“Madam Speaker, I have a Constitution here and, like most Members of Congress, I carry it with me. I’ve read it through and through, but I don’t see anywhere in the U.S. Constitution that it gives the government the power to control the type of light bulbs used in Dime Box, Texas or any other place in the United States. Besides the lack of constitutional authority, let me discuss these light bulbs further.” Congressman Ted Poe
Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Gen. 1:3; NLT)
We had several comments and emails about the DG Sharon did about CFL light bulbs! It seems it’s a dark subject for many. One of the more interesting was the floor speech Congressman Ted Poe (R-Tx) delivered almost three years ago (May 13, 2008). It’s about 5 minutes long, but definately worth your time.
One of the emails described a situation where one of the bulbs caught fire, but Snopes denied its validity. However, there have been some rather alarming accusations made against Snopes over the last couple of years which suggest that they are not without an agenda in their myth-busting activities. So, I’m always a little suspicious of their stuff.
Finally, an interesting piece of news from South Carolina where a group of legislators introduced a bill into their legislative process last week which — I’ll let the FoxNews piece tell the rest of the story:
Bill sponsor Rep. Bill Sandifer said the federal government had “far overstepped the bounds of the Constitution” with its proposal. He said the South Carolina bill could open the door for incandescent bulb manufacturers, which don’t have a presence in the state to Sandifer’s knowledge, to set up shop locally. But he said the bill was not introduced for economic stimulus reasons. He said people just don’t want to be forced into buying a specific kind of bulb, which could either be more expensive or less effective, or both.
“The bottom line is that the people of South Carolina really do not like to have, quote, big brother, telling them what kind of bulbs to light our homes,” Sandifer said.
Father, we thank You for the privilege of living in the United States where we can still openly disagree and speak up for what we believe.
The fervent use of antibacterial soaps and other antimicrobial products significantly contribute to a growing scourge: antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Dr. Joseph Mercola
Even if I were to wash myself with soap and cleanse my hands with lye to make them absolutely clean… (Job 9:30; NLT)
Recently, Dr. Mercola posted an article about 4 of the most dangerous myths of hand washing. The article, originally published in Becker’s ASC Review, and compiled by Bruce Clark was titled 9 Myths About Hand Hygiene. Dr. Mercola chose 4 of the 9 to highlight.
Hot water is better than cold water for effective handwashing
Scientists have found that various temperatures had “no effect on transient or resident bacterial reduction.” Not only does hot water not show any benefit, but it might increase the “irritant capacity” of some soaps, causing dermatitis.
Hand sanitizers kill germs more effectively than soap
Using alcohol-based hand-hygiene products is in general not more effective than washing your hands with plain soap and water.
Frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizers promotes healthy skin
In fact, contact dermatitis can develop from frequent and repeated use of hand hygiene products, exposure to chemicals and glove use.
Soap with triclosan is an effective antimicrobial for handwashing
A recent study compared an antibacterial soap containing triclosan with a non-antibacterial soap. The results showed that the antibacterial soap did not provide any additional benefit. In addition, concerns have been raised about the use of triclosan because of the potential development of bacterial resistance.
Becoming a conscious hand washer is the number 1 thing that you can do to protect yourself against acquiring and spreading infectious disease. But you don’t need to buy into the lie that antibacterial soaps “kill germs.” Studies have shown that folks who use the antibacterial soaps develop just as many symptoms of fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose, and diarrhea as those who use regular soap. Antibacterial soaps don’t kill viruses which is the usual cause for most of the above symptoms.
So how does one properly wash their hands? Dr. Mercola’s article offers a simple procedure.
- Use warm water
- Use a mild soap
- Work up a good lather, all the way up to your wrists, for at least 20 seconds
- Make sure you cover all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers, and around and below your fingernails
- Rinse thoroughly under running water
- Dry your hands with a clean towel or let them air dry
- In public places, use a paper towel to open the door as a protection from germs that the handles may harbor
I’ll end with some practical times to wash your hands.
- When doing any kind of food preparation being especially diligent with raw meats and poultry
- After touching or playing with animals
- After changing a diaper or going to the bathroom yourself
- After blowing your nose or coughing/sneezing into your hands
- Before eating
Dr. Mercola’s article provides extensive details on the dangers of antibacterial soaps and what they are doing to us as a society. Don’t become alarmed….but become armed with information. And don’t forget to WASH YOUR HANDS!
Father, thank You that You have given our bodies the ability to fight off disease germs and viruses. Strengthen the immune systems of our readers, Lord.

Dangerous Myths About Washing Your Hands

In the end however, regardless of how strongly anyone feels about being able to use these modern technologies, there is a price to be paid. According to Dr. Havas, microwaves will likely end up killing far more people than smoking and asbestos combined if we do not start thoroughly addressing its dangers. Dr. Joseph Mercola
But the result is as bitter as poison, sharp as a double-edged sword. (Prov. 5:4; NLT)
I had never heard of the work done by Dr. Magda Havas. However after watching this 7 minute video, I believe that what she is sharing will become household conversation for many.
No matter how we try to ignore, deny, or pooh pooh the effects of microwave radiation to our bodies and our environment, it’s a very real concern that may someday reach a crisis of epidemic proportions.
Many are attempting to sound the alarm and be a voice in the wilderness. Yet at times their cries are met with deafening silence by the powers that be. Don’t be one of those swept up in the frenzy of living an electromagnetic-loaded life. Arm yourself with information. Dr. Mercola’s article offers amazing insight into this problem.
Following are a few suggestions from his article to help protect yourself and your family from microwave radiation:
- Avoid having your child use wireless technology. Barring an emergency, children should not use a cell phone or wireless device. One alarming 2008 study indicated that that children and teens raise their risk of brain cancer by 500% if they use cell phones!
- Reduce your own cell phone usage. Turn your cell phone off more often. It emits radiation when turned on even if you’re not making a call.
- Use a land line at home and at work. I’m amazed at the many people who only have cell phones and no land line. It’s a dangerous trend that can be changed.
- Reduce or eliminate your use of other wireless devices.
- Keep your cell phone away from your body when it’s on.
Even though wireless technology has become a major convenience in our society, the costs need to be examined and evaluated. What can you do to help protect you and your family?
Father, thank You for wisdom and clarity to know how to live more safely in this current environment.

Worse than giving a child a cigarette
So then why do more people get sick in the winter? Well, I’ll give you a hint…it’s not the temperature, but rather the strength of the sun’s rays…In winter in the northern hemisphere (Canada, US, Europe, etc) sicknesses spike, but at the same time, it’s summer in the southern hemisphere (South America, Australia, New Zealand, etc), and while sicknesses are spiking in the northern hemisphere, sicknesses are at their lowest point in the southern hemisphere since it’s their summer. Mike Geary
Dear friend, I am praying that all is well with you and that your body is as healthy as I know your soul is. (3 John 1:2; NLT)
It is common knowledge nowadays that one of the main reasons people get sick in the winter is due to the lack of sunshine and the vitamin D that provides for our bodies. Low vitamin D levels have more to do with people getting sick than lots of other reasons we’ve always believed.
So, along with frequent and proper hand washing, here are a few other things you can do if you feel like you’re “coming down with something.”
- First of all, stop eating! Your body needs your energy to “fight” rather than digest heavy food. Giving the digestive system a rest will help the immune system go to war. (Remember, 70% of your immune system lies in your gut, so by not eating you’re helping your immune system do it’s job.)
- Fire up the juicer. Even though it’s best not to eat solid food, freshly made vegetable juice is one of the best things you can do to provide nourishment for your body. Juice greens such as spinach, kale, and romaine. Add celery, parsley, cucumbers, and a few carrots, as well as a small beet. Adding a piece of fresh ginger and a clove or two of garlic will give your body lots of ammunition to go to battle.
- Drink teas. Green tea contains good sources of anti-oxidants. Always drink organic green tea since regular tea is sprayed heavily for pesticides. Herbal teas such as ginger, Echinacea, and slipper elm are also beneficial.
- Drink kombucha. I’ve written about kombucha before. (See http://thecoachingpair.com/blog/good-bugs/.) Kombucha is a naturally effervescent fermented tea that contains billions of friendly probiotics to help strengthen your immune system by bolstering the levels of good organisms in your gut. (Again, the gut and immune system are connected.) You can buy kombucha at local health food stores and you can also make your own.
- Lastly, take vitamin D. Now, don’t go to the local drug store or discount store and buy synthetic vitamin D. If you need to know the name of a good vitamin D product, contact me (757-482-4490). I’ll give you the name of a high quality product that’s extremely reasonably priced. Both Jerry and I take a drop of vitamin D each day which contains 2000 IU. At times I even take two to 4 drops.
Do what you can to naturally strengthen your immune system and STAY WELL!!!
Father, thank you for Your healing power. We pray blessings of health over all of our readers.

“Children may be more vulnerable from exposure to any form of electro magnetic energy, such as that generated by mobile telephones, and to a degree baby monitors, because of their developing nervous systems, the greater absorption of energy in the tissue and a longer lifetime of exposure.” Safekids.co.uk
Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. (Ps. 127:3; NLT)
I’ve been learning about the dangers of electromagnetic pollution for several years now. However, I’ve also been a bit resistant to write about it since it has literally become a way of life for the majority of Americans. Even though I don’t tend to shy away from controversial topics, the entire subject of cell phone and computer radiation is one that I’ve not stepped into, until recently. (See last week’s DG “Taming the Microwave Dragon“)
Today’s SHORT video from iHealthTube.com is done by Dr. Kerry Crofton. Dr. Crofton talks about the potential dangers in wireless baby monitors. She also discusses the importance of avoiding wireless devices…including laptops and cell phones…while pregnant.
I was rather alarmed by the video so did some further digging into the subject. Safekids.co.uk had this to say.
Digital baby monitors use digital communication in their link between the mobile station and the base station.
Digital technology, due to its “pulsed” nature appears to be more harmful at lower levels of power than the older analogue technology, which is potentially more prone to interference but creates a more “even” output without spikes.
The article goes on to recommend keeping the baby monitor as far away from the baby as possible.
In the video, Dr. Crofton suggests using the older, wired baby monitors as opposed to wireless technology. I know parents love their children and would never knowingly do something to cause harm to their babies. Be armed with information and take appropriate action.
Father, we ask for Your wisdom in knowing how to best care for ourselves and our families in these times.

“Understanding how leptin works and applying that information to your day to day life can totally change your health. This is especially true regarding issues of weight management, thyroid function, stress, mental capability, inflammation, immunity, reproduction, and cardiovascular health.” Byron J Richards, CCN
You must serve only the LORD your God. If you do, I will bless you with food and water, and I will keep you healthy. (Ex. 23:25; NLT)
I know many of our readers have struggled with maintaining healthy, permanent weight loss. You’ve tried every healthy alternative available…along with many not so healthy methods to reduce that number on the scale. This article isn’t about one more “new, tried and true, permanent” weight loss system.
But it is about a little known hormone (only discovered in 1994) that is one of the most fascinating hormones in the study of weight management. Research has revealed that leptin is as significant as insulin in regulating proper body weight!
Leptin is from the Greek word leptos which means thin, and it is actually made in your body’s adipose tissue (stored fat cells). A part of the brain called the hypothalamus coordinates our appetite and our satiety (feeling full.) Leptin acts on the hypothalamus to tell us when to stop eating.
A number of signals control the amount we eat: sensory sensations such as taste and smell; the physical feeling of fullness; and chemical signals from the gastrointestinal system to the brain. The brain will note the amount of leptin secreted by the fat cells. If the brain senses normal leptin levels, the signal to store extra calories as fat…is shut off. The body no longer wants to eat since leptin has helped the brain tell the body to stop eating.
Similar to insulin resistance, overweight people have actually developed leptin resistance causing excessively high leptin levels in the blood. The brain’s leptin receptors become desensitized resulting in low leptin levels in the brain. The low brain levels result in food cravings and weight gain. The brain thinks the body is in a starvation state and tells it to continue to store fat.
So to help the body restore normal leptin function:
- Choose the best carbohydrates to eat. Buy your carbs from the produce section of the grocery store, not the inner aisles full of boxes and packages. That means you’ll be buying vegetables and fruits as your main carbohydrate sources. These carbohydrate sources help to maintain normal hormonal balance.
- Be more purposeful with the amount of food you’re eating. Use smaller plates and don’t have a second helping. The amount of protein should be the size of your palm and carbohydrates the size of your fist. You want to avoid excess carbohydrates being converted into fat.
To learn a lot more about leptin, read today’s link.
Father, thank You for providing healthy foods for us to eat. Bless our readers with the wisdom and knowledge to consume the best foods for their bodies.

“20 Million Kids & Adolescents are labeled with “mental disorders” that are based solely on a checklist of behaviors. There are no brain scans, x-rays, genetic or blood tests that can prove they are ‘mentally ill’, yet these children are stigmatized for life with psychiatric disorders, and prescribed dangerous, life-threatening psychiatric drugs. Child drugging is a $4.8 billion-a-year industry.” cchrint.org
Whenever he was put into chains and shackles–as he often was–he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to control him. (Mark 5:4: NLT)
Last Fall I published a Daily Gram titled, “Has Psychiatry Gone Too Far?” That DG was pointing out the abuses of psychiatry as exemplified by multiple examples of how psychiatrists have been given the legal ability to decide, without the benefit of any objective testing, what mental issue a person has and pin a label on them which they then will probably carry for the rest of their lives. I certainly don’t want to paint all psychiatrists with a generalization (i.e., a label) because I am sure there are many well-meaning practitioners who honestly have their patients well-being as their highest priority.
However, the system seems to have no provision for checks and balances of any kind. It’s an open door for abuse and malpractice. And who’s the wiser?
The very short, yet powerful video above is from the same organization I was highlighting last Fall. This video is just another way of telling the same story. But it’s a story that bears hearing again and again. How many young people do you know who have had their futures taken from them by some arbitrary labels and the associated drugs which accompany those labels?
I encourage you to spend some time on CCHRINT’s website, especially if you have some young children. Recognize that there is another side to this story that isn’t being reported by mainstream media. Sometimes, so called “behavioral problems” are not problems at all, but just expressions of a God-given uniqueness.
Father, we ask you to protect and redeem all those who have been given unjustified labels by an industry that has overstepped its boundaries.

“When polystyrene is sent to the landfill, it is quickly covered and this process deprives it of water and oxygen, which would normally help it to break down. Much of the disposable packaging that we eat from today will therefore still be around in 500 years.” businessbarbados.com
They are like smoke in the eyes or vinegar that sets the teeth on edge. (Prov. 10:26b; NLT)
A number of years ago, I was with a lovely young family on an outing when one of the children used the word “hate.” The mother stopped, bent down to eye level with the child and calmly explained why “we don’t use the word hate, except when speaking of evil or the devil.” She wanted the child to understand that hate is a strong word and not to be used lightly.
I was convicted and from then on have been conscious of how and when I use that word. So, when I tell you that I “hate” something, you know I feel rather strongly about it. And one of the things that I’ve hated for a long time is Styrofoam cups. I rarely if ever drink anything out of a Styrofoam cup. I don’t like how it feels on my lips or my teeth.
Recently, our colleague Mike Geary wrote an article about the risks associated with drinking from Styrofoam cups. Ah ha! I felt somewhat vindicated for my “hatred!” Apparently, when you drink hot, fatty, or acidic liquids from Styrofoam containers, it leaches small amounts of polystyrene and the component styrene into your drink or food. Sounds lovely, does it not? And when you bring leftovers home from your favorite restaurant, what is that container made from? Generally, good ol’ Styrofoam. Yes, more leaching.
Mike’s article says, “According to the Foundation for Achievements in Science and Education fact sheet, long term exposure to small quantities of styrene can cause neurotoxic (fatigue, nervousness, difficulty sleeping), hematological (low platelet and hemoglobin values), cytogenetic (chromosomal and lymphatic abnormalities), and carcinogenic effects.”
Today’s link says, “Polystyrene contains the toxic substances Styrene and Benzene, suspected carcinogens and neurotoxins that are hazardous to humans. Hot foods and liquids actually start a partial breakdown of the Styrofoam, causing some toxins to be absorbed into our bloodstream and tissue.
“Polystyrene food containers leach the toxin Styrene when they come into contact with warm food or drink, alcohol, oils and acidic foods causing human contamination and pose a health risk to people. Avoid drinking tea with lemon, coffee with dairy cream, fruit juices, alcoholic beverages and wine from Styrofoam cups. Red wine will instantly dissolve the Styrene monomer. Do not eat oily foods from Styrofoam containers.”
Though you probably won’t develop cancer from an occasional drink in a Styrofoam cup, I personally wouldn’t make a habit of drinking from them on a routine basis.
Father, thank You for Your protection for us and thank You for giving us wisdom to know what products to use and which ones to avoid.
