“This isn’t all that much different from any of the negative brands trying to embrace new brand names,” he said, adding the change is similar to what ValuJet – whose name was tarnished by a deadly crash in 1996 – did when it bought AirTran’s fleet and took on its name. They’re not saying this is a healthy vitamin, or health product. They’re just trying to move away from the negative associations.” Tim Calkins
Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive. (Prov. 23:3; NIV)
As children, we all loved a good magic show. The more sophisticated magicians of our day now call themselves “illusionists” as we are all now smart enough to know that magic is not really magic after all. Harrumph!
Well did you know that illusions are not restricted to the stage for entertainment, but are also widely used in the marketplace to deceive the buying public? The example of Valujet cited by Northwestern University’s Professor, Tim Calkins, was expressed in reference to a move by the Corn Refiners Association to erase the impact of all the bad press received by HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) over the last couple of years. So rather than admit that there’s an issue, they are choosing to simply change the name so as to whitewash the product’s negative reputation.
All in all, it’s a brilliant marketing move and one that has a high probability of success given the marketing clout (aka “money”) of the processed food industry. The truth will probably catch up with them a couple years down the road, but in the meantime they will likely salvage the free-fall of their 3-4 Billion dollar-a-year industry until it does.
You see, that’s the way things work. the CRA (the villain in this drama) has petitioned the FDA (our hero) to change the name of HFCS to Corn Sugar. How sweet is that? Now, it might take up to two years for our hero to make up its mind about the wisdom of allowing the illusion, but in the meantime, the villain is within its rights to freely use the new name. We’re already seeing the ads on TV claiming that “whether it’s corn sugar or cane sugar, your body can’t tell the difference. Sugar is sugar.”
Since it’s clear that our hero is busy slaying other giants and is unable to protect us, the best solution I’ve heard so far was in Dr. Joseph Mercola’s recent post on this issue in which he called for us consumers to launch a massive social media (Facebook, Twitter, blogs, web sites, et al.) campaign to expose the villain’s dastardly deception. This DG is to throw The Coaching Pair’s small amount of influence behind such a campaign by the people.
If you would like to study this issue more, I have provided three links on this topic as today’s Links of the day. I find it a fascinating study. And as you have heard me say more that once before, “Hang in there, folks — we’re winning this war for our health!”

“Honey is a traditional topical treatment for infected wounds. It can be effective on antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.” Peter Charles Molan, Ph.D.
Fill your bags with the best products of the land. Take them to the man as gifts–balm, honey, spices, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds. (Gen. 43:11b, NLT)
I feel fairly certain that many of our readers have heard, perhaps in old wives tale form that honey is good to use on cuts or open wounds. I do admit though, thjavascript:;at in all my years of working as a nurse in the traditional medical field, I never heard of honey being used in this type of setting. However, I recently read of actual scientific research uncovering how and why honey works on bacteria. Fascinating stuff!
Aaron Turpen, citizen journalist for Natural News reveals the facts. In this recent study, “researchers at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam methodically isolated the constituent parts of honey by comparing it to antibiotic-resistant, disease-causing bacteria versus a sugar-based “placebo.” They eventually found that the primary anti-biotic element in honey is defensin-1, an immune system protein. The bees manufacture the protein for their own immune systems and impart it to the honey they make as well.
“After comparing defensin-1 to other anti-bacteria elements in honey, the researchers concluded that this single protein is responsible for most of honey’s bacteria-killing properties.”
Doing some further digging, I located a rather amazing story, again touting the benefits of honey in killing bacteria.
When Jennifer Eddy, a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, first saw an ulcer on the left foot of an elderly diabetic patient, it was pink and the size of a quarter. Fourteen months later, drug-resistant bacteria had made it an unrecognizable black mess.
“Doctors tried everything they knew — and failed. After five hospitalizations, four surgeries, and regimens of antibiotics, the man had lost two toes. Doctors wanted to remove his entire foot.
“He preferred death to amputation, and everybody agreed he was going to die if he didn’t get an amputation.”
Dr. Eddy stepped out of her conventional medical box and dressed the wounds in honey-soaked gauze. “In just two weeks, her patient’s ulcers started to heal. Pink flesh replaced black. A year later, he could walk again.”
Dr. Eddy went on to say that she’s used honey in a dozen cases since then, and every one of them has had improvement.
Aaron Turpen ended his article appropriately with this. “Honey is one of nature’s miracles, but it’s taken science a long time to finally come around to investigating what it is about honey that makes it unique. With one amazing property of honey down, science now only has a hundred more to go!”
BTW, I’ve provided three links in today’s post for those of you who would like to know more about this amazing discovery.

“There is an unseemly exposure of the mind, as well as of the body.” William Hazlitt
Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Phil. 4:8b; NLT)
Have you ever found yourself thinking that what you listen to on the radio, your ipod, or wherever doesn’t really matter? Oh, I can’t understand the words anyway, but I love the beat? Or, man I hate all the violence (or sex) in the movies these days, but it won’t bother me…after all, it’s only a movie…or TV. I know it’s not real — it’s just a story someone made up. Or, I know I shouldn’t eat that or drink that, but just this time won’t hurt.
There is a law out there that cannot be escaped. Maybe it’s not directly stated in the Good Book, but its truth is clearly acknowledged in the above verse. I’ve heard it called the law of association, the law of exposure, the law of proximity, et al. Doesn’t matter what you call it. It’s as sure and as powerful as the law of gravity. You cannot ignore it and get away with it.
Bottom line, your mind will absorb and mirror back what it is exposed to on a repeated basis. Tell yourself it won’t, and you’re only deceiving yourself. It’s inescapable! It’s possible, although not likely, that your conscious mind can keep a wall between what you see, hear, read, watch, associate with, and your thinking on a conscious level, but you can never escape the sub- or unconscious mind, which experts are now telling us controls well over 90% of our behavior.
Our culture has changed over the years. Time was, when you had to go out of your way to find things to put into your mind that would drag you down. Today however, you have to go out of your way to avoid those things. And in many cases, you have to overcome an even greater force — what all your friends and associates are doing and obviously find acceptable.
What goes into your mind fills your mind (conscious and/or subconscious) and it becomes how you begin to look at things. We’ve all experienced it. What was horrifying yesterday, is rather bland today. How you begin to look at things, (i.e., your paradigm, your perception) will ultimately be reflected in your behavior — sometimes when you least expect it. Have you ever had some words just “pop” out of your mouth that you would have never said if you had thought about it? Where do you suppose they came from?
Folks, be careful what you are allowing into your life. Be mindful of the movies/TV you watch, the music you listen to, the books/magazines/newspapers/Internet ideas you read. Think about the folks you hang around with, the places you frequent, the conversations you have, the food you eat. Your choices have inescapable consequences. Are you prepared to pay the price?

“Swimming for just 40 minutes may result in cancer-causing DNA damage.” Mercola.com
God named the dry ground “land” and the water “seas.” And God saw that it was good. (Gen. 1:10; NLT)
I rarely swim in an indoor pool but I have close friends who do so on a regular basis. When I saw this recent post from Dr. Mercola I did a little more digging and felt compelled to share this message with our readers. With the onset of cooler weather (here in this country at least), people may be doing more swimming in indoor pools. Be forewarned.
Even though most of this article is taken from Dr. Mercola’s post, I did locate other resources providing the same information. As most would agree, swimming is an incredible form of exercise, however if you’re swimming in chlorinated swimming pools, especially one that’s indoors, your health could be at risk.
Apparently, something called DBP’s or disinfection byproducts are formed when organic materials such as hair, skin, sweat, dirt and urine react with the large amounts of chlorine used to sanitize the pools.
Quoting Dr. Mercola’s article, “DBPs are over 10,000 times more toxic than the chlorine itself, and in the first study of its kind to examine exactly what kind of damage these toxins are doing to swimmers, the results were alarming.”
Furthermore, “Researchers measured evidence of genotoxic (DNA damage that may lead to cancer) and respiratory effects on swimmers who swam in a chlorinated pool for 40 minutes. They found:
- Increased micronuclei in blood lymphocytes, which are associated with cancer risk
- Urine mutagenicity, a biomarker of exposure to genotoxic agents
- An increase in serum CC16, which suggests an increase in lung epithelium permeability
“In all, more than 100 DBPs were identified in the pool water, and the researchers noted that tests showed the levels was similarly mutagenic to drinking water but able to kill cells at a lower concentration.”
One of the most common DBP’s, trihalomethanes (THM’s) are Cancer Group B carcinogens, meaning they’ve been shown to cause cancer in lab animals. They’ve also been linked to reproductive problems in animals and humans such as stillbirths, congenital malformations, and spontaneous abortions.
These types of DBP’s can also:
- Weaken the immune system
- Disrupt the cardiovascular system
- Disrupt the central nervous system
- Cause renal and respiratory problems
Dr. Mercola says, “This is a serious issue if you swim in chlorinated pools on a regular basis, as your body absorbs higher levels of DBPs by swimming in a chlorinated pool once than you would by drinking tap water for one week!”
I don’t mean to “throw cold water” on your swimming fun, but you might want to rethink that form of exercise.

Father, may we seek you in all things and in every area of our lives. Thank You for speaking to us and giving us Your wisdom.

“An estimated 70 percent of the food products sold in grocery stores come from plants that have been genetically altered to grow faster, larger, or more pest-resistant.
And God said, “Look! I have given you the seed-bearing plants throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. (Gen. 1:29; NLT)
Sweden was the first (1766) of 85 countries around the world to implement some sort of freedom of information law. Exactly 200 years later, the United States passed the now famous Freedom of Information Act. Sometimes we find ourselves almost wishing it hadn’t happened because that law, especially in conjunction with the Internet, has spotlighted some incredibly corrupt shenanigans of our government. Certainly, light is better than darkness, but corruption and greed is never pretty.
In the light of all this legislated honesty, one would think that “the jig is up” on the deceptive practice of withholding information. Au contraire — let’s look at look at genetically modified food (GMO) as a case in point. (BTW, the title ‘FrankenFood” is supported by the Wikipedia article on Frankenstein which states that the monster’s name has frequently been used as a metaphor for science run amok. Another interesting piece of trivia is that some have declared that GMO really stands for “God, move over”!)
According to Chuck Missler, “Monsanto’s Mon 810 maize has already been banned by Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, and Luxembourg. Poland has outlawed all GM crops. China, Japan, the EU, Korea, Australia and New Zealand require foods containing GMOs to be labeled, and countries like the UK have banned GMOs for the most part. However, the FDA does not require US farmers or food manufacturers to mention genetically modified plants among the ingredients on product labels, and the FDA considers both GM and non-GM foods safe for human and animal consumption.” (Koinonia House, 10/5/2010)
Hmmmm…what does the rest of the world know that we don’t? Or is the better question, “What do we know that the rest of the world doesn’t know? But as recently as last May, Dr. Mercola reported that the U.S. negotiators at an international (Codex) conference from May 3-7, were pushing an agenda that could make it difficult for anyone, anywhere in the world to label foods as genetically modified (GM) – or even make non-GMO claims on their product’s label. What do you think of that little piece of deception?
In that same article, Mercola says that “Most Americans (53%) say they would avoid GMOs if they were labeled. But even 5% would likely be enough to create a tipping point of consumer rejection, forcing all GM ingredients out of our food supply.” It’s that “tipping point” that this DG is all about.
You see, October is officially Non-GMO month, and more specifically, yesterday (10/10/10) was Non-GMO Day. In support of that, Mercola published another article with a video interview with Jeffrey Smith, the lead player in the quest to raise consumer awareness and reach that tipping point. In that interview, Smith briefly describes the victory of the European consumer over GMO as follows:
In [the beginning of] 1999, the biotech industry… was still anticipating that they could replace 95 percent of all commercial seeds with genetically engineered seeds within five years… But a single high profile GMO food safety scandal erupted in middle of February 1999.
Dr. Arpad Pusztai… has been gagged and told that if he talked about what he knew, he would be sued. Well, by an order of parliament, his gag order was lifted and he could finally talk about how he discovered that genetically engineered foods were inherently unsafe and could create all sorts of damage — just from the process itself, irrespective of what gene you put in.
Seven hundred and fifty articles were written within a month, and within 10 weeks virtually every major food company committed to stop using GM ingredients in Europe because it had become a marketing liability.
They weren’t instructed to do that by the government. They were instructed to do that by consumers at the top of the food chain.
Most believe that that tipping point in the U.S. could be as little as 5% of the shoppers. The Coaching Pair has long been on record as being part of that 5% and toward that end are providing the link where you can download the FREE Non-GMO Shopping Guide.

“Large numbers of people, perhaps even the majority of the population, are adversely affected by gluten on some level, and most of them do not have full-blown celiac disease, just a lesser form of gluten intolerance.” Mercola.com
He sends peace across your nation and satisfies you with plenty of the finest wheat. (Ps. 147:14; NLT)
Gluten seems to be one of the latest buzz words in the health arena. We’re reading about it everywhere. While recently visiting my elderly mother in a personal care home, I picked up a copy of Guidepost magazine from her nightstand. Glancing through the magazine I saw an article about a woman who recently discovered that her son was gluten intolerant. Hmm…I thought this was a magazine of inspirational stories.
Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and spelt. In people with a condition called celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune reaction that damages the small intestine and prevents absorption of nutrients. These people can become extremely ill until they learn what is happening in their body.
An article by Dr. Joseph Mercola, which I’ve included as Today’s Link, says that “Large numbers of people, perhaps even the majority of the population, are adversely affected by gluten on some level, and most of them do not have full-blown celiac disease, just a lesser form of gluten intolerance.”
When Jerry and I did the Anti-Inflammatory Eating Plan (AIEP) earlier this year, we eliminated all grains for several weeks. After a number of weeks, we gradually began eating spelt sourdough bread and sprouted whole grain tortillas. During a chat with a dear friend, who is also a chiropractor and nutritional guru, the topic of gluten surfaced in our conversation. She began telling me more about how/why people don’t tolerate gluten. She also recounted her own personal experience of how gluten bothers her.
For those of us who had our ears tuned, we heard that Chelsea Clinton’s wedding cake was gluten free. (I kept watching for a recipe but never did see one.) It seems the subject of gluten is everywhere. After my conversation with my chiro friend, I stopped eating gluten again. I just read that Silvana Nardone, former editor-in-chief of the magazine Every Day with Rachael Ray, said, “I feel better when I don’t eat gluten.” I would have to concur.
Quoting from Mercola.com,
“Grains and sugars are inherently pro-inflammatory and will worsen any condition that has chronic inflammation at its root — and not just inflammation in your gut, but anywhere in your body.
“Those with celiac disease know the importance of eliminating grains from their diet, as many cannot tolerate even minute amounts of gluten, but this message has still to take root in the collective mind when it comes to dealing with autoimmune diseases and other inflammatory conditions.
“In fact, if you want to avoid heart disease, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes or even cancer, you will want to severely limit your grain consumption, or avoid grains entirely.
“In my experience about 75-80 percent of ALL people benefit from avoiding grains, even whole sprouted grains, whether you have celiac disease, gluten intolerance or neither of those conditions.”
Oh, and the Guidepost story…it turned out to be quite inspirational as the mother shared how she took action to help her son become well again.

“If seven-year-old Mozart tried composing his concertos today, he might be diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and medicated into barren normality.” Washington Post
Soon Israel will know this all too well. “The prophets are crazy!” the people shout. “The inspired men are mad!” So they taunt, for the nation is burdened with sin and shows only hatred for those who love God. (Hosea 9:7b; NLT)
Some time ago, I published a DG titled, “Eating Healthy Food is Now a Mental Disorder.” I guess this DG can be called “Part Two.”
About a month ago, I ran across a blog post by Mark Nestmann titled, “Are Independent Thinkers Mentally Ill?” (See Link of the Day below.) Amazingly provocative title, don’t you agree? Especially if you consider yourself to be an independent thinker rather than one of the “masses.”
In case you haven’t heard, we’ve got an election coming up. Believe me, this is not a politically-motivated Daily Gram, although I can’t speak for what Mr. Nestmann had in his mind when he wrote his blog article. In any event, I’m sure there are folks who consider themselves independent thinkers on both sides of the aisle.
We are living through the most massive shift in culture this country has ever seen and sometimes the debate can get a bit ugly and disrespectful. While I don’t agree nor defend those who do stoop to such behavior, I do defend their right to do so without fear of being tossed in the “loony bin.” After all, who is the definer of and therefore judge of the aberrant behavior?
Today’s link as well as the one I posted about eating healthy food should raise a concern about where all this is headed. But then again, I guess that could be considered an independent thought and therefore subject to institutionalization.

Father, we find ourselves sometimes wondering, “Where will it all end.” Fortunately, all we have to do to is read the back of Your book.

“Carrageenan, commonly used in ice cream and baked goods, is an especially powerful promoter of cancer growth and spread.” Dr. Russell Blaylock
But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. (I Timothy 6:9; NLT)
I’ve seen carrageenan on various food labels from time to time. It was my understanding that it was a harmless thickening agent made from seaweed. I’ve recently been reading Dr. Russell Blaylock’s, Natural Strategies for Cancer Patients. I’ve had my eyes opened to this “harmless thickening agent.” Dr. Blaylock’s comments sent me searching for further information.
I learned that, “Carrageenan is a commonly used food additive that is extracted from red seaweed by using powerful alkali solvents. These solvents would remove the tissues and skin from your hands as readily as would any acid.
“Carrageenan is a thickening agent. It’s the vegetarian equivalent of casein, the same protein that is isolated from milk and used to thicken foods. Casein is also used to produce paints, and is the glue used to hold a label to a bottle of beer. Carrageenan is the magic ingredient used to de-ice frozen airplanes sitting on tarmacs during winter storms.”
Another source related incidences of bowel problems, colitis, and colon cancer to the use of carrageenan. “Inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal malignancy represent major sources of morbidity and mortality in the United States. A possible factor in the etiology of these pathologies is exposure to carrageenan.
“The potential role of carrageenan in the development of gastrointestinal malignancy and inflammatory bowel disease requires careful reconsideration of the advisability of its continued use as a food additive.”
Dr. Blaylock cited a study in which researchers injected varying concentrations of carrageenan into the vicinity of a growing tumor. The carrageenan caused the tumor to become much more aggressive in its growth. The higher the dose of carrageenan, the more malignant the tumor behaved.
Carrageenan is found in food products such as ice cream, desserts, cream, sweetened condensed milk, soy beverages, milk shakes, beer, diet sodas, pates, and sauces. It’s also found in pet food, tooth paste, shampoo, air fresheners, shoe polish, pharmaceutical drugs, fire-fighting foam, and personal lubricants.
Even though I’ve been an avid label reader for over 3 decades, I’m still learning. And even though we eat a diet of primarily whole foods with very few processed foods, I have occasionally purchased something containing carrageenan. I will no longer do that.
Prayer Power
Father, thank You for Your protection for our readers. Bless them this day with health, wisdom, and provision.
